ZUMI

Neighbourhood: West End
Address: 1588 Alberni St, Vancouver

Sushi trains were, without a doubt, one of my favourite dining experiences while travelling in Japan. While I was generally excited to fumble my way through the process of ordering dinner in a language I could not speak, desperately calling back to Duolingo lessons I had perhaps blown off, sometimes, I just wanted to sit down, throw back some sushi, and keep my blood pressure at a manageable level. As I discovered, there’s a certain kind of satisfaction that comes along with watching the plates stack up as evidence of an excellent meal. Give a girl some sake and an endless train of fresh nigiri, and some serious damage can be done.

Vancouver is no stranger to good sushi. We are home to some of the most acclaimed seafood in the world, presented in an expanse of different concepts and iterations. Until now, the sushi train has been the missing piece. That’s where Zumi comes in.

Stationed on the bottom floor of the breathtaking Alberni tower by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the room’s natural wood interior and warm lighting offer an excellent contrast to the utility of conveyer belt service. It’s the epitome of uncomplicated dining. Punch in an order on the tableside screen, and wait for the plates to whirr their way over. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else in Vancouver, and it’s one worth taking the time to enjoy. The menu includes all the usual suspects, from sashimi and rolls to tempura and chicken karaage. There’s no need to overthink it, and no need to hassle your server every time you decide you have room for one more nigiri.

Conversation flows easily when you aren’t hung up on crafting the perfect order all at once. Have a chat, share some bites, and take it all as it comes. Booths are available to accommodate larger parties, but the room also offers bar seating perfect for duos or solo diners. My favourite part? How easy it is to be nosey and spy the items ordered by the table next to you as they cruise along the track.

Zumi will open for service on October 25th, and seating will operate on a first come, first served basis. Lunch will be available daily from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and dinner from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
