Family Roots, Bold Flavours: Golden Smell Mee Returns to Chinatown
GOLDEN SMELL MEE
Neighborhood: Chinatown
Address: 142 East Pender Street
Golden Smell Mee isn’t just a new restaurant—it’s a heartfelt return. Reviving the legacy of Bee Kim Heng (meaning Beautiful Golden Smell), a Malaysian-Singaporean deli that first opened in Vancouver's Chinatown in 1986, this family-run spot brings generations of tradition back to the table.
Sidenote: The original deli became two different operations, BKH Jerky and the Kim Heng Noodle (now closed).
Opened in May 2025 by the grandchildren of original family, the reimagined eatery offers handmade noodles, rich curries, and soulful street food dishes like Bak Chor Mee, Laksa, and grilled sambal squid—comfort food passed down with care.
Set in a casual, 28-seat room on East Pender Street, Golden Smell Mee combines the nostalgia of Southeast Asian hawker centres with the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown community. It’s open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., welcoming regulars and first-timers alike with warm service and food that speaks to memory, migration, and home.
