Mates on Crates Feat. James Heras

G’day,

Those in the know, know where to go.

We’re excited to have just launched our latest episode of Mates on Crates, featuring James Heras, Co-Owner of 7 Seas Fish Market in Kitsilano, Vancouver. A staple of the neighbourhood for nearly 60 years, this family-owned fish market has grown from a single storefront into a major seafood operation supplying restaurants, retailers, and customers across Canada and beyond. Visitors can expect a wide selection of fresh and frozen seafood, including wild BC salmon, halibut, oysters, prawns, and the market’s popular house-made crab cakes, alongside knowledgeable advice on selecting and preparing seafood. James works alongside his three brothers in the family business founded by their father, who immigrated to Canada from Greece and opened the original shop in the 1960s. With experience spanning seafood retail, processing, distribution, and international sourcing, James is helping carry the family legacy forward while developing seafood preparation classes that can be booked via Tableside, a culinary events app James has developed.

It was a pleasure to sit down with James to chat about the history of 7 Seas, Vancouver’s seafood scene, cooking fish at home, supporting local producers and all of James’ favourite spots.

Each time we do a Mates on Crates interview, our guests share up to twenty of their favourites with us. For each episode, only a handful of those favourites make it into the final two minute cut. In order to highlight all of our guest’s favourites, we are happy to share the full list of favourites right here.
