Mates on Crates Feat. Cuma Yaldiz

G’day,

Those in the know, know where to go.

We’re excited to have just launched our latest episode of Mates on Crates, featuring Cuma Yaldiz, Owner of Emilee’s Sweet House on East Hastings in Vancouver. Opened in January 2024, Emilee’s Sweet House brings the flavours and traditions of Turkish sweets and coffee to East Hastings, with 14 varieties of baklava, Turkish delight imported from Turkey, Turkish coffee, and a Turkish breakfast experience. Guests can expect a relaxed setting where breakfast is meant to be leisurely, with plenty of time to sit, talk, and enjoy the food. Cuma is originally from the Gaziantep province of Turkey, a region renowned for its baklava, and opened Emilee’s Sweet House to bring the kind of baklava he had been looking for in Vancouver to the city himself. His particular skill lies in the careful preparation of baklava, from stretching the dough exceptionally thin to getting the butter, starch, and syrup just right.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Cuma to chat about baklava, Turkish coffee, Turkish breakfast, Turkish delight, the upcoming North Vancouver location, and all of Cuma’s favourite spots.

Each time we do a Mates on Crates interview, our guests share up to twenty of their favourites with us. For each episode, only a handful of those favourites make it into the final two minute cut. In order to highlight all of our guest’s favourites, we are happy to share the full list of favourites right here.

Cuma’s favourites at Emilee’s Sweet House:

  • Dessert: Cold baklava

  • Drink: Turkish coffee
