Indian Roti on Cambie Should Be Your Next Takeout Order
This place totally flies under the radar. Unless you live in that strange stretch between Olympic Village, Mount Pleasant, and Queen Elizabeth Park (Cambie Corridor?), you’ve probably never heard of it. Indian Roti Kitchen is a neighbourhood secret, like Corduroy Pie before it—back when that was the pizza in the city. It’s also sitting right across Cambie Street from a world-famous Indian restaurant. But here’s the thing—we really like Indian Roti.
With Elio Volpe and Potluck in the area as well, it felt like the right time to highlight a spot that deserves just as much recognition. If you can’t squeeze onto Elio’s waitlist, or Vij’s was full and you’re still feeling Indian, this should be your go-to backup. Except, after one visit, it won’t feel like a backup anymore. It’ll just be your spot.

This place is no frills. No fancy décor, no over-the-top branding. Just a small counter, a single extremely pleasant person always running the front (always the SAME person, by the way), and the constant ring of the phone taking orders. They handle everything—phone calls, in-person orders, payments—without missing a beat.
There’s almost nowhere to sit. A couple of seats, but let’s be real—this is takeout only. You come here, grab your food, and leave. Simple.
The menu? Long. Every Indian classic you’d expect. No fusion, no experimental dishes. Just straight-up, real-deal, authentic Indian food presented in a fun way. Everything comes in a tin takeout container, wrapped tight in a plastic bag, still piping hot when you get home.
They call themselves Vancouver’s First East Indian Roti Shop—we didn’t fact-check that, but we believe it. They’re certainly the best. They also say it’s “an easy way to enjoy Indian food,” which is also true.
The roti is the thing here. Whatever you choose, you’re getting a massive, wrapped, delicious roti package of Indian flavours. It’s warm, packed with meat or veggies, and absolutely dripping in a rich, spiced sauce.
We always go for the butter chicken roti with low heat (a 2) and a lamb biryani rice dish at a high spice level (a 4). You can get a 6, but it’s blazing hot (we warned you). We grab raita on the side, pour it over the rice to cool it down, and always get a side of mango chutney. It’s sweet, tangy, and perfect with the spicy rice and seasoned lamb.
There are over 20 rotis on the menu, all authentic and packed with flavour. Some other favourites:
Mutter Paneer Roti: Indian cheese and green peas in a cream sauce.
Mixed Vegetable Korma Roti: Vegetables cooked in a rich, cashew-based cream sauce.
Chicken or Lamb Madras Roti: A bold mix of coconut milk and curry leaves.
It’s fast food but completely homemade. The portions are huge. You’ll find samosas, pakoras, rice dishes, desserts, pickles, juices, and more—but really, you’re here for the roti.
This is our favorite Indian food to order, to decide on, and to eat. Especially as takeout. There’s something about unfolding the tabs of the to-go box and digging into a saucy roti. We love it here. It’s our favourite Indian food in the city.
We also love Vij’s, but they don’t need any more hype. They’re an institution. You Google “best Indian food in Vancouver,” and it’s there. No surprise.
But if you want Surrey-level Indian food in the heart of Vancouver? This is the spot.
Indian Roti Kitchen doesn’t need help either. Based on the sheer amount of food flying out of this unassuming little shop, they’re doing just fine.
We’re not helping them. We’re helping you. In case you haven’t found this place yet.
Now you have.
